Steps for Leaders

Incorporate PLT strategies into other school activities. Using these strategies in staff and other committee meetings reinforces them.

Use team roles and role badges in meetings to infuse them into the school culture. The principal can keep a set of role badges in the office for easy access.

Develop and use schoolwide working agreements (norms) and a common process for decision making during staff and committee meetings.

Provide additional resources such as a quiet place for PLTs to meet, notebooks to store meeting logs and other team documents, and books and journals for a professional library.

Provide access to research on best practices and classroom strategies. Enlist the assistance of the librarian or an administrator to search out appropriate research early on while teachers are becoming accustomed to the process.

Provide space to store materials that may be used by more than one PLT; look for common space and provide a file cabinet and bookshelves in the library or teachers’ workroom.

Acknowledge conflict and use it as an opportunity for growth.

Provide clear expectations about the following: Team accountability

Meeting times and the outcomes of meetings

Working with a specific question to guide the team’s inquiry and maintaining a focus on student learning

Ensuring coherence with schoolwide and district goals
